Is being a stenographer learning about a different way of writing?
Not really, but stenography is actually short hand, and another definition that would be easily understood is an abbreviated or shortened writing process, or possibly a system.
Did you know that stenography actually originated in Ancient Greece, at around the mid-fourth century BC? Another useful tidbit is that the slave, Marcus Tiro, developed the Tironian notes, coming from his name, so he could write down the speeches of Cicero. Marcus was later freed by Cicero.
Modern times see the use of the Pitman shorthand, which was originally developed by Isaac Pitman, in eighteen thirty-seven. Although still widely used in the United Kingdom, it is not superseded by Gregg’s shorthand writing that is more commonly used these days.
So, should you decide to study in stenographer schools, you will be able to learn all these types of shorthand, and decide for yourself what is easiest to learn, and memorize. After all, it is really about memorizing and committing to memory all these symbols.
In the beginning, just like anything else, it is difficult. Starting out is always complicated and demanding. So you should know that when you start out with something new, especially with stenography schools, they would most likely make you take more than what you can chew.
So take heart, this is something that you want to get into, therefore, persevere. In the end, as always, you would at all times, see the fruits of your labor and hard work.
